Monaco Smart Yacht: Showing the way for a sustainable transition of the yachting industry

Yachting industry gathering for positive impact

A new wave of sustainability

For the first time, the Monaco Smart Yacht took place during Monaco Ocean Week, illustrating a strong will coming from the industry to act now for the preservation of the ocean, and environment. Over the past five years, it has become increasingly pressing for the yachting industry to undertake its transition. Following the lead of maritime regulations, but also the impulse of yacht owners, all the players from this value chain, from the shipyard to the marina, have started to look closely at sustainability

Innovation is the answer

Whilst not being the only solution, the yachting industry is looking at innovation as a part of the answer. Changing the traditional way to build a yacht is an elaborated task. It requires knowledge, time, proof of concept. But by scouting new possibilities, shipyards, designers, charter and management company are opening the gate for change, a change for the better. Therefor, shipyards have joined to introduce the work they are doing both internally with their R&D and innovation teams, and with external partners as well. This way, innovative companies are able to co-create the future of yachting

A Rendezvous to step into the future

Startups, scaleups, and corporates joined to introduce their vision for the future of this industry. Coming from both the yachting industry, and other sectors, they are determined to bring their solution on this market. The three winners are very representative of that diversity of players. Nlcomp won in the startup category with their goal to solve the problem of the end-of-life of fiberglass composites. Lineat Composites – another composites company – won in the scaleup category with this product enabling multiple re-use cycles of carbon fibre and lowering carbon emissions. Finally, Wisamo won in the corporate category, with their large inflatable wing, initially designed for cargo ships with the aim of decarbonizing maritime transport.

And innovation also comes from every branch. From battery propulsion to security softwares, everything is included in this selection to really work on the yacht’s life cycle. Curious to know more? Deep dive in the e-catalogue, and meet the innovators.

About the Monaco Ocean Week

The Monaco Ocean Week has been initiated by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The goal for this special week is to gather around one key topic: ocean’s preservation. Each year since 2017, the ocean community comes from all over the world to Monaco to exchange ideas and introduce new actions. This unique series of event is organized by The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, but also the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, Albert Ist Prince of Monaco Foundation, the Scientific Centre of Monaco, the Government of Monaco as well as the Yacht Club de Monaco

This variety of actors allows different type of entities to express their progress and challenges. Therefore, it is possible to meet with scientists, NGOs, public authorities and business entities. It is rare to find such a platform, and it was a real honour for Monaco Marina Management and Blumorpho to be able to organize the first edition of Smart Yacht as a part of it, and to invite in the discussions all of these yachting players

Next step: the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina 2023

The Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous has been designed in parallel of another action: the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina. Coming back for a third edition in September, Monaco Marina Management and Blumorpho will be pursuing the common efforts in addressing the transition of this industry.

During the last edition, the Rendezvous brought together in Monaco a committee of selected startups, marinas and architects, each competing in their own category. In the startup cateogry, ECOncrete®️ was the winner. In the marina category, their were two winners: Flisvos Marina, and Habacoa Marina. Finally, in the architect category the winner was Nbax Architecture & Design.
